Letter: Sen. Liz Mathis hosts Medicaid meeting

Iowans are having problems with the transition from Medicaid, our state’s most important health care safety net, to a managed care system.

Recently, I talked to six families from my district who are having problems with this transition and relayed that information to state officials. That was just one week’s worth of concerns and only from people who contacted their state senator.

Iowa needs to get this right. We all have a stake in problem-solving Iowa’s Medicaid issues. No matter who we are, we are one severe accident, long-term illness or disease away from needing help from Medicaid.

That’s why I’m organizing a meeting on Medicaid privatization that has two goals. First, to consider suggestions for policy ideas that will strengthen our Iowa Medicaid system. Second, to help individuals and providers through the struggles they are having with managed care.

This listening post and help session will be from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Kirkwood Training and Outreach Services (KTOS) building at 3375 Armar Drive in Marion.

During the discussion with state and local leaders, there will be one-on-one meetings with representatives of Iowa Department of Human Services and the three Managed Care Organizations (Amerigroup, AmeriHealth and United Health Care). A listening post will be conducted, so please bring your suggestions and opinions.

I hope you can join us.

Sen. Liz Mathis
