Liz Mathis of Hiawatha was sent to the Iowa Senate in a special election in 2011 and re-elected in 2012 and 2016. She represents the people of Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha, Robins, Bertram, Ely, and southern Linn County.
Senator Mathis is an Assistant Democratic Minority Leader, ranking member of the Human Resources and Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Committees. She also serves on full Appropriations, Commerce, Agriculture, Ethics committees.
Liz is the daughter of a World War II veteran and a schoolteacher. She grew up on her family’s farm near DeWitt, attended Central Community High School and graduated from the University of Iowa.
Liz was a journalist for 27 years, and now works on special projects for a child welfare and behavioral health agency. She has received numerous awards for her work in journalism, women’s leadership, the legislature and her community, including the Corridor Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” and “Most Influential” awards.
Liz and her husband Mark own a marketing and advertising company with offices in Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids and Wausau, Wisconsin. They are the proud parents of two adult children.
